Coming soon.. may & mae....

Okay,
So I have a little announcement to make... It's still in the "beginning planning" stages but it should be up and running in a week or two...

For a long time I've been sketching and drawing and playing with fabric and just making stuff for my kids and my friends. I started to notice that I stopped using the patterns that I bought and was making stuff up on my own.  I had been encouraged to start a little etsy shoppe, but wasn't sure if I anyone else would be interested in what was spinning in my head all day long...
Last month something happened (won't say what) and I decided to get off the fence...
So I picked a name, had a logo designed and started sketching even more....

*don't you LOVE my logo?... Angela did it for me*

So I'm pleased to announce my own little "corner" of the design world... fourteen may... I wanted the name to be something unique about me... so I picked my birthday (and no, this is not some evil plot to get everyone to remember my birthday... well not entirely *wink*).

And as most things in life go, it's always better with a friend,

so Traci of amazing mae and I are teaming up to open the etsy shoppe. Since her company is amazing  mae and mine is fourteen may... our etsy shoppe is called:

may & mae

What will be in it you ask?  Well pretty much a hodge podge of whatever is going though each of our heads at the time ... patterns, crafts, craft kits,  holiday stuff, handmade items, jewelry, purses, skirts.......  Let's just say you'll be surprised on a regular basis :-)

When you ask?  Well, first and foremost Traci and I are Moms who take our kids to baseball practice, cook dinners, wipe noses and help with homework... This little venture will come second... it will start small and we hope to see it grow and grow over the coming year... I can tell you we WILL have stuff up and ready for the Christmas Season....

So stay tuned...

Okay, Okay, Okay... you want a full size Tree Skirt...

Okay, So you guys want the Tiny Stripey Tree Skirt in the size for a full size tree!
Just give me a day or so, I'll figure it out. I'm not going to make a full one but I can get you some directions and drawings to make it. I know that it will take yardage cut into strips, or a Jelly roll (not honey bun).
Also, check out the FAQ or the runner & tree skirt here...
Keep the questions coming!! I can do another FAQ if there are alot of common questions!!

Christmas projects follow up...

Just a quick follow up.. I've gotten the same question about a dozen times today, so I figured I'd just post it here, so you all can see.. if you have more questions feel free to email me or leave a comment..(also if you have a question, be sure to leave your email address so I can get back to you).

Q: Where do I get the fabric?
A:  Fat Quarter Shop has all of the supplies in stock (I just checked)... I have ordered from them before and they are fast! (also, this is truly just my opinion... no "paid" advertisement here).
***Also just got an email from The Quilt Shoppe, they have figgy pudding in stock.

Q: What if I only want to make the table runner? What supplies do I need.
A: For the table runner only, you can eliminate the 1/2 yd of blue fabric that I used to bind the tree skirt.  Other than that, the supply list is the same. If you ONLY want to make the tree skirt, you do not need the white jelly roll or turnover. Just the honeybun, batting & backing fabric and 1 fat quarter to make binding.
****edited to add***
okay, and other repeat question:
Q: can this be made full size?
A: Probably, but it would take some "math" and planning.. If I figure it out, I'll be sure to post.
Hope this helps! Like I said let me know if you have more questions.

New tutorial, Tablerunner & Tree Skirt up at Moda Bake Shop!

Whew!!!!!!!!! Finished!!!!!!!

I'm so excited today to be sharing the tutorial for the Skinny Stripey Table Runner and Stripey Tiny Tree Skirt up at Moda Bake Shop!!

Let me know what you think, or ask me a question!!!
This one was a labor of love, lots of changes, unpicking and redesigning... then LOTS of quilting using a 4x6 hoop on my embroidery machine (yeah, that took a while, the runner is 105" long!)

I can't wait to decorate for Christmas and start using my new projects!

"Not Recipe"- Greek Chicken Pitas

A freind of mine Heather, (who has a blog but is going to make it private so I won't share) suggested that I share some recipes here.... Well what she didn't say was that most of my best recipes come from her. (or Traci, or my Mom)...

I do have a few that are uniquely mine, so I thought I'd share a few.  I'm calling it a "not recipe" becuase it's cooked from pre-made stuff, thus it's NOT a recipe. I have lots of "not recipes"... I'll have to share more of them with you. (most of them were born out of my desire to ONLY grocery shop at Costco, it's too much work to go to 2 grocery stores).
The best thing about "not recipes"... they are fast, you can make them and get your family fed all in 15-30 mins.

A little background to this one:

My daughter and I, after lunch.

Carving the yummy meat.

Two summers ago our family took a wonderful trip cruising the Mediterranean. While there, we visited Athens, and I was bound and determined to find myself some authentic Greek Souvlaki. With the help of Samantha Brown & our tour guide, we found it.  It was delicious, fresh, awesome flavor, one of the best meals I've ever had... seriously. *oh, on a side note, when we got there I tried to order the Pork Souvlaki, and the waiter told me "No, chicken lean for woman, pork for man."  So I giggled and ordered the chicken, but stole some pork off my husbands plate.*

We left Greece (also stopped in Mykonos, had more souvlaki, oh and THE best crepes! but I digress this isn't really a food blog) and I realized I was not likely to eat that food again. (you never know, but I have no immediate plans to go back to Athens).
We searched for good Greek food locally, and came up empty, we did find one place that is a Mediterranean restaurant and is a new favorite of ours. However, I wanted to be able to cook it at home.
Traditional Greek Souvlaki is cooked on a spit... well there's no way I'm getting a spit, so I had to settle for my grill.
After about 15 attempts, this is my version...soooooo NOT like the one in Greece, but good enough flavors to satisfy a craving.
Plus my super duper picky kids eat it.. they all cheered when I told them what was for dinner.. go figure.

You need:
Boneless skinless chicken breast (plan 1 per 1-2 people)
Girards Greek Feta Vinaigrette dressing
Feta Cheese
Tzatziki Sauce (I get mine at Costco).
Tomatoes
Cucumbers

Mixed Greens
Pita bread. You can buy the kind in the deli at the grocery but if you want really good, go to Whole Foods (well at least that is where I can find it here) and buy Lavash bread. You can also make your own flatbread, I'll post a "not recipe" for that one later.

Put your chicken in a ziploc bag and pour about 1/2 the bottle of salad dressing over it. Let it marinate, the longer the better.

Chop up the tomatoes and the cucumbers. Place in a bowl, add feta cheese (just to your liking), kosher salt, and some of the salad dressing. (don't ask me how much of each, I told you this was not a recipe *wink*). Let it sit for at least 10-15 mins (or while you cook the chicken)

Grill the chicken, let it rest for about 5-10 min (or as long as you can fend off your starving children).

Slice into strips.

Heat up the pita either on your gas stovetop or in the microwave.

Assemble,
layer 1 pita, a handful of greens, sliced chicken, tomato mixture and top with tzakzki.

Enjoy!  and try to eat just one :-)

*also, if you are trying to cut down your carbs, these are just as good without the pita

Making Progress!!!

Okay, so being sick and Halloween (as in sewing costumes) have thrown off my creative "mojo" a bit... but I HAVE been working lots and lots... but seem to not have anything to show for it yet!  This week I'm buckling down and MAKING myself finish up my next Moda Bake Shop project...

Remember this quilt???
LOOK!

*image from www.quiltedjoy.blogspot.com

Angela from Quilted Joy has my quilt on the quilter!!!! One step closer to get it on my daughters bed! Do you see the cute polkadot fabric?? That's the backing.. (For those of you that asked, Angela does do out of town orders... you can find all her info on her website).

In other news... my latest "creative project" was finished this week (well part of it was finished and part of it has only begun!) ... It's a construction project built by a two Amish guys.. I can't wait to show it to you, but we'll save that for tomorrow.

One last thing... If you are looking for easy gift ideas for Christmas for kids, friends or neighbors, check out the side bar on my blog. Under labels there is one called "easy gift ideas"... As I have been blogging these 2 years, I've been labeling certain posts that I think would make cute easy gift ideas.. Check it out.

Now.. its time to get OFF the internet, and back to the sewing machine.

Corsage belt tutorail.......

Hi Everyone!
I had a few requests to repost my corsage belt tutorail from my blog swap with Stephanie of Somewhat Simple... so here goes!!!

A little bit about me:
After growing up in Salt Lake City, I met a Kentucky boy in college and moved to Louisville. I've been here for almost 15 years, so now I consider myself a Kentucky Girl.   (oh but NOT a U of K fan... U of L all the way!!).  Our family loves it here, it is so beautiful! We just had the most spectacular fall colors, and I get to drive by horses grazing in the fields every day.  I have 3 great kids, a teenage daughter and boy girl twins that are 8, and a wonderful husband that most days still thinks he is a kid!

Now onto today's project!
This is a skirt that I made for my daughter last spring. I got to thinking that it need a little extra "something"... My teenage daughter last winter had this great flower corsage belt that she would wear with plain black dresses to jazz 'em up... so I thought I'd make one for my youngest daughter.

*if you like the skirt, you can find a full tutorial on how to make it on my blog*

To start you need a bunch of flowers from the craft store.

Find your favorite one and using wire cutters, clip it off the bunch.  Clip the wire as close to the base of the flower as you can.

Pull the center of the flower out and disassemble the flower. Lay all the pieces out on your table to get a good idea of what you have to work with.

Thread a needle with heavy duty thread (like quilting or upholstery thread).  Put a knot in the end and set aside.

Using the pieces of flowers that you have, arrange them in a way that looks nice to you. If you picked a "not full" flower to start with you may need 2 flowers to get the effect you want.

Place the flower pieces on a bamboo skewer, this will help you to keep the petals lined up while you sew.

Sew around the center of the flower, DO NOT cut the thread yet. Remove from the bamboo skewer.

Place the shank of the button though the center hole in the flowers. Sew into place. Tie a knot but don't cut the thread yet...

Take a piece of ribbon about 2 x as big as the waist you want the belt to go around. Sew the flower to the ribbon slightly off of the center mark (you don't want the flower to sit dead center on your waist).
Tie a knot, cut the thread.

Place the belt on you (or your daughter) and cut the ribbons to size!

Enjoy!
Thanks to Stephanie again so much for letting me borrow your blog today!!!

Blog Swap with Stephanie from Somewhat Simple

Hey Everyone! I am delighted to be taking over this darling blog- I think we can all agree Melissa is pretty darn fantastic, so I hope what I have to show off here today measures up to her creativity!

My name is Stephanie, and on most days you will find me over at Somewhat Simple. I am a wife to my very best friend and mom to my 3 favorite kids in the world! I come to you all the way from Arizona- the only place in the US that seems to have something personal against 70 degree weather- its either stinkin' hot or stinkin' cold! My family moved here 4 years ago from California and while we do miss the weather in Orange County, we are super happy living here!

Life is great, but is often hectic, am I right? For today's little tutorial, I made an easy craft that puts things into perspective for me each time I see it. Let me show you what I am talking about...

Ever heard of this quote? :

“The biggest mistake I made [as a parent] is the one that most of us make. … I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of [my three children] sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages six, four, and one. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less”

I LOVE this quote and decided I wanted it hanging on my wall somewhere to remind me what's really important in life. The entire quote itself is a bit long, so I shortened it and came up with this display:

(In case its hard to read from the angle, it says: "LIVE IN THE MOMENT treasure the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.")

Its just a cheap frame from IKEA that I painted black. The background is some fabric and the vinyl is on the outside of the frame. It was super easy to do, but I didn't LOVE it... so back to the drawing board I went and came up with this instead:

Ahhh! Much better!
Here is a step-by-step tutorial so you can make one too!

1. Set up an account with Picnik.com- its easy and FREE!

2. Find a picture you love of your kids and upload it to Picnik. I chose this one of their feet:

3. Once on Picnik, turn the picture Black & White

4. Add some text. (Live in the Moment is in Times New Roman and the smaller text is in Jules-Te-Reo)

5. Crop it.

6. Add a vignette (the size on this one is 10-15)

7. Print it out

I just emailed it to my husband and he printed it off his nice printer from work.

8. Frame it!

I tried a few different frame options: an 11x14 with an 8x10 matte, different colored mattes etc, but the one I like most was this simple black frame without no matte at all.  Sometimes less is more!

9. Display it!

Mine is on my nightstand- its my daily reminder to enjoy life as it is- craziness and all!

I know being a mom is hard and crazy at times, but I just don't want to have any regrets and miss out on this chance to make memories every dayl!!! Hopefully this picture will remind me during those rough times to savor every second- I am not going to get this time back, and it really is a great time in life!!!

For more creativity and inspiration, I would love for you to visit me at somewhat simple! I post all kinds of easy crafts, yummy recipes, giveaways and monthly challenges- each day is something new and each day is something exciting! I just announced a HUGE giveaway coming soon- click on this picture to see what it is all about!:

Melissa, thanks so much for having me! It has been a pleasure sitting in your polka dot chair for the day- its quite comfy and I never want to leave!
Have a great weekend!
